Family Hiking Challenge

From the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H of Warren and Washington Counties

Warrensburg, NY – Looking for fun, healthy opportunities to engage your family in hiking this summer? Join Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H of Warren and Washington Counties for the Family Hiking Challenge. We’ve created a guide of hikes from beginner to advance for your family to get outdoors and have fun. In addition to a variety of hikes that you can do on your own, we will offer four guided hikes with experienced leaders in the field of nature photography, natural resources, local history, and wilderness exploration.

To compete in the Challenge, your family must complete a total of six hikes including at least two of the guided hikes offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension, and attend an orientation Zoom meeting where we will cover hiker safety and Leave No Trace Principles. Families who participate in the Challenge will get hiking swag and a guidebook to local hikes. Those families completing six hikes will also be awarded a variety of prizes to help them to continue exploring outdoors. The Challenge begins at the end of June and runs through the second weekend in October.

This Challenge is open to any family in Warren and Washington Counties and there is no cost to participate. The mandatory orientation will be held on June 18th at 6:30 pm via Zoom. To sign up for the Challenge and orientation, please contact Cornell Cooperative Extension at 518-668-4881 or Michele Baker at mlb222@cornell.edu by June 18th.

Spending time outside with your children in natural environments can increase physical activity, connect families to one another, and connect children with nature. Whether your family is up for shorter hikes or more challenging outdoor adventures, the Family Hiking Challenge will offer opportunities to get outside and have fun this summer.
